The 5 Most Popular Cosmetic Treatments for Men

In today’s society, it has become increasingly accepted — if not common — for women of all ages to treat themselves to an indulgent spa facial, an anti-aging filler, or even cosmetic surgery to improve their self-confidence. Why, then, are so many men still hesitant to enhance their appearance via cosmetic treatments, even if it means they’ll feel better about themselves?

While some stigma may still exist today, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, cosmetic treatments among men have actually increased 53 percent between 2011 and 2015.

At Anderson Plastic Surgery, 38 percent of our patients are male — and they’ve been thrilled by their results! These are the five most popular cosmetic treatments among our male patients.

1. Botox

According to CNBC, use of Botox for men has increased 27 percent since 2010, driven in part by a desire to combat ageism in the workplace. Botox in men has become so popular, in fact, that some now affectionately refer to the wrinkle-minimizing treatment as “Brotox.” At Anderson MedSpa, we use Botox to treat fine lines and wrinkles for our male patients, as well as to combat excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis. In June, men who visit Anderson MedSpa will receive discounted pricing for Botox at $10 per unit and 10% off other anti-aging fillers such as Juvederm and Voluma.

2. IPL Photofacial

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, only 14 percent of men — versus 29 percent of women — report that they regularly wear sunscreen. This means many men show early signs of sun damage and aging, including hyperpigmentation, sun spots, wrinkles and broken capillaries. These signs of aging can be treated with an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacial, a procedure that uses short pulses of light to minimize pigmentation and stimulate collagen production for even-toned and youthful skin. The photofacial takes just 30 to 60 minutes and involves minimal pain and downtime, making it an easy procedure for the busy male patient to work into his schedule. Another popular anti-aging treatment for our male patients is laser skin resurfacing, which is ideal for minimizing fine lines and wrinkles for a smoother, brighter complexion.

3. PRP Hair Restoration

Similar to our “Vampire Facial,” PRP hair restoration uses your own platelet-rich plasma to stimulate new cell growth. In the case of the facial, platelets from your blood, separated by being spun in a centrifuge, are deposited topically onto the skin to stimulate skin cell growth. With PRP hair restoration, these same platelets are injected into the scalp to improve circulation and encourage the growth of new hair follicles, helping hair grow where it is sparse or thinning. We recommend four to six treatments, each four to six weeks apart. Watch as Dr. Anderson receives his first PRP hair restoration treatment on Facebook Live, with new hair growth expected in three to four months.

4. Face and Neck Lifts

While men seem to be more accepting of their fine lines and wrinkles than women, we still see many male patients who want a more youthful look and opt for a face and/or neck lift. With more than 25 years of experience working as a plastic surgeon, Dr. Andersonhas perfected his technique to restore a patient’s youthful appearance while also ensuring he does not look overdone or “worked on.” A neck lift can address sagging skin, but we recommend a groundbreaking new injection called Kybella for submental fullness or a “double chin.”

5. Liposuction/Tummy Tuck

Many of our male patients maintain healthy diets and exercise regularly, but still can’t seem to shake stubborn belly fat. This is where liposuction or a tummy tuck come in. Dr. Anderson also does “liposculpting,” transferring fat from unwanted areas to other areas of the body for a desired shape. This is often done for men who want more volume in their calves or pecks but do not want implants.
